Best High-Performance Electric Bikes

My SRD’s life began as a pile of mitered tubes destined to be an iteration of the forthcoming enduro-focused Sour Double Choc during the middle stage of Sour’s onshoring process when tubes were still mitered in Taiwan and welded in Germany. Due to some mis-mitering, the tubeset couldn’t accommodate the tire clearance required by the Double Choc as well as the Horst link, so whatever it is that I’m riding was born. Elegant, lightweight, and aerodynamic design with a top opening design for easy access without dismounting. With cutting-edge inverted forks designed and manufactured in Taiwan, riding the E-Clipse 2.0 off road or on road can easily be adapted by the fork settings.

I’d cruise around looking for things to ride up, down, off, or onto. It wasn’t the super-hyper-extra-long enduro-specific wheelbase I expected, and while for a minute that was disappointing, the disappointment was only relative to my expectations rather than the reality of riding the bike long term. Suspension is just not something I’ve ever felt that I needed, so this is my first bike since owning a 1995 Pro-Flex 855 that has had suspension, and needless to say it’s a completely different box of frogs. I set the suspension up to the letter of the manual for my weight and rode it for a month or so like that to get used to it. Having never owned a proper bike with suspension and only having ridden one in anger a handful of times, I had very little to compare it to, but I do feel like 160 mm of travel on the front and 155 mm at the back are beyond my riding for sure.

Second, many newcomers to the e-bike industry just aren’t prepared to drop several thousand dollars on a brand-new concept, making this price range critical for many first-time e-bike shoppers. High quality parts like hydraulic disc brakes complete the package, and the included fenders and rear rack increase the bike’s value. The bike is also tested to higher standards for ruggedness of the frame and fork than most e-bikes in this price range, meaning it’s likely going to last longer too. As far as fat tire adventure-style e-bikes go, there’s no better bang for your buck than the Lectric XPeak.

To get there, that meant a relatively low-power motor and a smaller battery were required. But for the folks that ride these types of bikes, a big motor and heavy battery probably aren’t on their wishlist anyway. Instead, a simple extra boost, as if you’ve always got a tailwind, helps augment your own pedaling. The high-capacity battery and powerful motor also make for sprightly acceleration and longer than average rides, so you’ll have enough power to ride all day. One of the coolest features though is the passenger package that adds a rear bench seat, wheel skirt and foot pegs so you can carry a second rider on back. The second seat has a quick release so you can easily pop it on and off the bike whenever you need to swap back and forth between carrying your friends or a basket full of groceries home.

That means the Roadster V2 is best for someone who enjoys cycling and simply wants an assist motor to help them go faster and farther. Those who are on the hunt for a good-looking folding fat tire e-bike that doesn’t break the bank will likely find this to be one of the more fashionable options. To be honest, the frame member is low on both of them and so they’re both easy to mount, but I actually prefer the step-through.

The belt-drive setup, low-weight design, and fast speed of up to 24 mph make this an incredible deal. The bike started life with Berghaus flat pedals, because I felt like that was what I should run. However, a couple of months in I gave up on learning to hop things properly and switched to Hope XC pedals, hoping that they’d help me get some air. In fact, they hyper bicycles didn’t as the sensation of jumping through the suspension was completely new, and my poor technique bunny hopping did not translate to a bike with suspension. Regardless, I did continue to run the Hope pedals because I felt more secure clipped in, which inspired greater confidence which in turn improved my riding, even if it was for the wrong reasons.
