The one-millionth bicycle manufactured by Huffman Manufacturing rolled off the assembly line on May 13, 1947. Huffy bikes are still around today, and things have changed a lot since their early days. The company that became Huffy Corp. originally operated as the Davis Sewing Machine Company. By 1924, a part of the company became Huffman Manufacturing Co., which focused solely on producing bicycles. Booths representing local businesses and organizations handed out information on how people can get involved and what’s available for them in Park Ridge. In Park Ridge, about 300 people celebrated National Night Out at Hodges Park.
By 1953, a Huffy logo was created and Huffman switched all its bicycles to the Huffy brand. A few of the most popular models included the Special Roadster, the Racer, the LaFrance, and the Streamliner. Mascots for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears were available for a photo opportunity with children and huffy bikes a trailer with Nintendo video games was also on site in Park Ridge. The Chicago Bears official drumline also performed songs from their routine to hype up the crowd.

In 1954, Huffman Manufacturing Co. signed a deal with British company Raleigh Industries to sell English-style light-weight Raleigh bicycles under the Huffy name. Even though there was still some supply issues, the company was back to producing a “balloon” style bike. One that was complete with headlights, chain guards, stands, balloon tires, double-bar frames and “plenty of style.” All men’s bikes were painted maroon, and the women’s bikes were blue. The new frame was approximately 4″ to 5″ longer than previous models. In 1968, in an effort to market a children’s bicycle with an automotive theme, Huffman designers added a car-type steering wheel in place of handlebars to the Rail frame, which became the Huffy Wheel. When I first started cycling, I tried different products from Huffy Bikes. Since their bikes are affordable, I thought Huffy would be a good option to start with for my family too. I remember getting my daughter the Huffy Glimmer Kid’s Bike, on her 3rd birthday. She is a bit of an extreme rider like her dad, but it’s safe to say that the bicycle hasn’t been replaced yet.
Dayton is known for bicycling innovation and interesting bits of history are on display close to home. “Only a handful” of workers were moved to Huffy’s bike plant in Farmington, Missouri. The Farmington plant was opened in 1994 and was non-union.
